Something to Travel For

Being on vacation is often reason enough to take photos and photos are sometimes reason enough to take a vacation. The Cherry Blossom Girl, Under Those Neon Lights and Tim Robison have posted some photos that would inspire me to hit the road, if I weren’t already. Tim’s photos really get me because he’s shooting film. I left my film cameras at home because there really wouldn’t be time to get it done on this trip, and also to save a little weight in baggage. I’m still tempted to pick up a camera here and shoot a few rolls. See the links below for more of their work.

Rudy’s Bar-B-Q (Austin, TX)

Barbeque is pretty much the peak of my eating aspirations for our road trip. And while we’d hit some good brisket at George’s Restaurant in Post, TX I had to write about this place too. Rudy’s “Country Store” and Bar-B-Q came recommended from locals and showed up in a few touristy guides. It’s a little bewildering at first, not only because of the unfamiliar set up, but because of how busy it is. But quickly one of the staff, a sort-of maître d’barbeque gave us a run down of the place, how it works and then sent us over to the counter. We received a huge, and I mean surprisingly huge despite the warnings, welcome “for a couple of Kiwi rookies” from everyone behind the counter before getting to try a few samples and make our picks. We were having such a good time at this point that it almost wouldn’t have mattered what we ate. But for the record, two types of briskett and two types of ribs plus creamed corn and banana pudding. All delicious, but I recommend the juicy briskett. If you want to try some Texas barbeque in Austin, I couldn’t imagine a better pick.

Not Pictured (Austin, TX)

Try as I might I can’t keep a camera on hand at all times, and even when I do I might be having too much fun to stop and take a photo. Here are a few of the other things we did in Austin.

We made an attempt to go kayaking, unfortunately the Texas Rowing Company experienced a big flood at the Town Lake and were out of action. If that weren’t enough to stop us the Town Lake itself was closed for safety reasons.

We wanted to go swimming at Barton Springs. It sounds like it’s a really nice pool but unfortunately this too was closed. Instead we went to Deep Eddy and enjoyed the sun and swimming. Barton Springs is on the list for next time.

This is very high on my list of things to do in Austin. The Alamo Drafthouse. Possibly the world’s best movie theater. First of all, bar & snack service while you watch. If that weren’t enough check out the event calendar on the website. The shows range from cult movies to special guests and sing-alongs. I really wish I had time for more movies at this place. A week after we left Bill Paxton was there up for a Space Balls quote-along and a couple months ago Christopher Lloyd showed up in a Delorean for a Back to the Future screening (a brand new print, for those who note such things). It might be worth moving to Austin for this place alone. Update: They’re showing the Community and 30 Rock premieres this week. If I lived in Austin, I’d be there.

The photo below is from our visit to the South Congress Bridge where Mexican Free-tailed Bats live from March – November. Each night they take to the skies at sunset. While I did get a photo of this, I’d say there are less than 100 bats in the photo. What’s not pictured is the rest of the 1.5 Million.

Tacos, Shakes and a Fried Chicken Doughnut (Austin, TX)

The Trailer Park. . . Torchy’s Taco’s feat. Mr Orange. . . Red Velvet if You Please. . . The Oasis. . . The Hula Hut. . . Lake Austin. . . Craving. . . Gourdough’s Returns. . . With Chicken. . . And Bacon. . .

Right now the Food Network is having The Great Food Truck Race. Based on the list the Austin competitors are all pretty enticing and the three we made it to were great (Gourdough’s, Torchy’s Taco’s and Holy Cacao). We also found a few good restaurants to eat/drink at too including a Hawaiian themed Mexican place (The Hula Hut) and Margaritas with a view at Oasis.

The Big Top Candy Shop (Austin, TX)

The Big Top . . And Still More Candy. . . With Soda Fountains to Boot. . .

South Congress has a very fancy candy shop with far too many tempting items in it. I really wanted to try the cucumber soda but they had just run out by the time I’d made my pick.
