Japan, Take 2.

Kamakura, Kanagawa (2007)

In 2007 I visited Tokyo with Kate, who has just spent a week there. I’ll be joining her later this month for five nights in Japan. Last time I only saw Tokyo, and though it we had a great time there, I’m really looking forward to staying in Sonobe, visiting Kyoto, and going to Osaka for the first time.

The Hobbit – An Inevitable Party

I took some time on Wednesday to wander around the crowd and shoot a few snaps of excited fans waiting for the fanfare of the Hobbit World Premiere. I’m very lucky to live in a city that can get so entirely excited about something geeky and film related. I saw a good share of well dressed hobbits, a ring-wraith enduring the heat in a full cloak and all manner of Middle Earthy types. I even heard rumours of an Ent wandering the crowd. A fantastic bunch of fans and a beautiful day for the celebration.

I also had a look in at Greg Broadmore’s Doctor Grordbort’s Exceptional Exhibition, now open on Cuba street through January. There’s a huge amount of paintings on display as well as sculptures and rayguns. Definitely worth the visit if you’re a Broadmore, Grordbort or Weta fan.

Jack White Blue

I’ve always enjoyed the aesthetics of The White Stripes. The candy cane colors always felt right, whether in the form of an album liner, t-shirts or the Under Blackpool Lights concert. Only a few months in and I’m already a fan of Jack White’s color choice as solo artist. He’s rocking blue this time, and it’s working for him and his bands. I’ve never wanted a powder blue suit so badly. The screengrabs below are from Jack White’s VEVO live performance.

Six Barrel Soda Co.

I’ve been visiting Six Barrel Soda Co. since they were tearing out and fitting their premises on the corner of Dixon and Eva Streets. It’s been exciting watching the cafe take shape. Here’s the deal – it’s a soda factory, but it’s also a cafe serving up their small batch soda’s, sliders, coffee and treats. The place is simple, comfortable and a pleasure for the food photographer. I’ll let the photos describe the rest.

The Wake Up Call is Monkeys

Though the intended audience is probably kids or school groups, it’s possible to have a sleep-over at Wellington Zoo. The night tour was interesting but my favourite part of the experience was being at the zoo first thing in the morning when all the animals are awake and many are waiting to be fed. Also pretty great was waking up to the bizarre primate calls in the morning. As always, the Red Pandas are the stars of the show.
